Last update: 17 March 2025

This section provides the most recent available data on the number of educational institutions at pre-primary, primary, secondary and post-secondary non-tertiary education level (ISCED levels 0-4). Information on tertiary education institutions (ISCED levels 5-8), can be found in the European Tertiary Education Register (4). Educational institutions that cater specifically for adult learning are not covered. A general overview of the categories of institutions providing publicly subsidised adult education and training can be found in the chapter on adult education (5). The notes below the tables provide methodological explanations necessary for a good interpretation of data.

Notes:

  • Early and Preschool Education and Care (Kindergartens): The Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia plays a pivotal role in overseeing Early and Preschool Education at a national level. MoESY sets standards for the educational component, ensures quality and authorizes institutions. Local municipalities, on the other hand, are responsible for funding and managing public early and/or preschool education institutions and ensuring the implementation of national standards in each region. As of 2024, there are 2050 early and preschool education facilities, source: eqe.ge

  • General Education Schools: These institutions encompass primary (grades I-VI), basic (grades VII-IX), and secondary (grades X-XII) education levels. As of December 2024, there are 2,294 general education schools in Georgia, with 2,086 being public and 208 private institutions. Source:  eqe.ge

  • Vocational Education Institutions: These cater to post-secondary non-tertiary education (ISCED level 4) and focus on vocational training. As of 2023, there are 184 such institutions in Georgia. Source: geostat.ge

  • General Education Schools with Special Education Services: Many general education schools in Georgia offer inclusive education programs, integrating students with special needs into mainstream classrooms. In the 2024-25 academic year, out of 2,086 public schools in Georgia, children with special educational needs study in 1,550 schools. All public schools receive additional funding to support the education of SEN students. Up to 14,500 SEN students from 640,000  are involved in mainstream education.

    • There are only seven specialized schools in Georgia:

    • For students with mental retardation and severe and multiple disorders (4);

    • For students with hearing impairment and deaf students (2);

    • For students with visual impairments and blind students (1).
