11.4Guidance and counselling in early childhood and school education

Last update: 29 April 2026

11.4.1 Academic guidance

Academic guidance is provided throughout compulsory education by class teachers, school administrations and, where available, guidance counsellors. It supports learners in understanding curricular requirements, monitoring their academic progress, and facilitating transitions between educational levels.

11.4.2 Psychological counselling

Psychological counselling services are provided through school-based specialists and/or Educational Resource Centres. These services support learners’ emotional and social well-being and include individual counselling, preventive programmes, behavioural support and crisis intervention.

Schools collaborate with families and external services to address more complex needs.

11.4.3 Career guidance

Career guidance is provided mainly in basic and upper secondary education and aims to support learners in making informed decisions about further education and employment pathways.

Activities may include information sessions, visits to vocational and higher education institutions, meetings with employers, and participation in career-related events. Digital tools and online platforms are also used to provide information on education and labour market opportunities.
