Curriculum, Subjects, Number of Hours
Based on the National Curriculum, the school creates a school curriculum that describes the mechanisms for ensuring the quality of teaching and learning:
a) School philosophy and curricula by level (including individual curriculum - a curriculum created by adapting the National Curriculum, taking into account the special educational needs of the student);
b) Processes supporting school development: strategic plan development, curriculum development, personnel management and development, the safety of people and processes, material resources and infrastructure, information resources, financial resources, student education and support systems.
The mission and goals of the National Curriculum are realized based on the following principles:
a) In-depth learning;
b) Positive learning environment;
c) Inclusive education.
The National Curriculum defines the subjects and number of hours taught in general education. Subject groups include both mandatory and elective subjects[1].
The subjects provided in the National Curriculum are grouped into eight subject groups, including Georgian Language, Mathematics, Foreign Languages, Social and Natural Sciences, Technologies, Aesthetic Education, and Sports.
Subjects included in subject groups are taught as compulsory and/or elective subjects at all three levels of general education.
English is introduced as the first mandatory foreign language from grade 1, and a second foreign language typically begins in grade 5. Private schools with enhanced foreign language teaching status are authorized to start teaching a second foreign language from any grade. Public schools are authorized, by written agreement with the Ministry, to begin teaching a second foreign language from the third grade. The school must offer students at least two languages as a second foreign language.
Schools are required to use Ministry-approved textbooks but are encouraged to incorporate interactive and student-centred teaching approaches. Per the rules for approving textbooks/series of general education institutions, they are textbooks intended for teaching a specific subject provided by the national curriculum. It meets the necessary conditions for approval and, by order of the MoESY, is approved for a certain period. This gives the textbook an advantage over all other educational resources and is used in the educational process as the main educational resource during the validity of the label. Types of textbooks are student books, student book supplements, student notebooks, teacher's books, and electronic resources for students or teachers' books.
SEN students are provided with assistive technologies and specialized materials to support their learning assessment.
[1] Elective subjects are taught for two hours per week and are not taught in the second semester of grade XII.
