Last update: 15 April 2026

First-cycle programmes in North Macedonia correspond to bachelor studies and are organised in accordance with the Bologna Process. They are based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) and aligned with the National Qualifications Framework.

First-cycle programmes typically carry 180 or 240 ECTS credits, depending on the type of programme. In line with the National Qualifications Framework, academically oriented programmes are classified at Level 6A and usually comprise 240 ECTS credits, while professionally oriented programmes are classified at Level 6B and usually comprise 180 ECTS credits.

Academic programmes focus on theoretical knowledge and preparation for further studies, while professionally oriented programmes focus on applied knowledge and skills relevant to the labour market.

First-cycle programmes are offered by universities and professional higher education institutions (visoki stručni školi). Professionally oriented programmes may also be delivered within universities.

Access to first-cycle programmes is granted to students who have completed upper secondary education and passed the Државна матура (State Matura) or an equivalent examination. Admission criteria are defined by higher education institutions in accordance with national legislation.

Successful completion of first-cycle programmes leads to the award of a bachelor degree, which provides access to second-cycle (master’s) studies or entry into the labour market.
