First-cycle programmes are designed to provide higher education students with the ability to solve typical problems in a particular field of professional activity. They are classified as level VI qualifications in the National Qualifications Framework. Ukrainian universities, academies, institutes and some colleges are higher education institutions (HEIs) offering first-cycle programmes. University, institute and college programmes are more focused on universal general education, theoretical knowledge and professional competences of the highest level. College programmes are more focused on preparing students for professional activities.
Upon completion of the first-cycle programmes, graduates are awarded either a Bachelor's degree in the relevant knowledge branch (speciality) or a Bachelor's degree and professional qualification(s).
The short cycle programmes are designed to provide a qualification at level V of the National Qualifications Framework and to complete a separate cycle within the higher education system. Colleges issue certificates of learning to students who have completed a short cycle.
