In North Macedonia, there is no specific initial teacher education programme for academic staff working in higher education.

Academic staff are required to hold a doctoral degree (PhD), in accordance with the Law on Higher Education. This is the main requirement for entry into teaching and research positions at higher education institutions.

Initial preparation of academic staff is primarily research-oriented and takes place during doctoral studies. These studies provide advanced knowledge in a specific field, as well as research competences.

There is no formal requirement for pedagogical training as part of initial education for academic staff. However, higher education institutions may provide training in teaching and learning in higher education.

Higher education institutions have autonomy in the recruitment of academic staff, in accordance with national legislation and institutional regulations.
