Unlike for school education teachers, the legislation does not specify any initial education pathways or standards for academic teachers, nor is the completion of teacher training required to hold positions available to academic teachers. 

Higher education institutions (HEIs) can set out requirements regarding teaching experience or any teaching skills certificates in job descriptions for individual positions or in assessment criteria for competitions for the recruitment of academic staff.
