Teachers' salaries and allowances

  • Teachers’ remuneration is regulated by top-level authorities for all education levels.

  • The minimum qualification required for teachers at pre-primary level is ISCED 3 and ISCED 7 at all other levels.

  • Salary progression of teachers depends on the grade scales and professional competence evaluated through examination. Teachers at pre-primary level can also move up the grades by acquiring higher education). Teachers get 0,25% increase for each year of service for the first 8 years of service, then teachers get 0,5% increase for each year of service for the next 32 years.

  • Teachers are not civil servants. Teachers have the status of public employees (employees performing work in the public interest).

    School heads' salaries and allowances

    • School heads’ remuneration is regulated by top-level authorities for all education levels.
    • The minimum requirement for school heads at pre-primary level is ISCED 3 and ISCED 7 at all other levels. In addition, school heads must have 5-year pedagogical experience as 'independent teacher' (career position) and must successfully complete the CPD management programme.
    • Salary progression of school heads depends on years of service and qualification.
    • School heads are not civil servants.

      Amendment to the Education Act

      In January 2025, an amendment to the Education Act (Act No. 290/2024 Coll.) came into effect, introducing the following changes:

      Key features of the education system

       

      Public schools provide primary and secondary education free of charge. Higher education is free for full-time students as well, providing that they do not exceed the standard length of study. Private and church schools may charge for education provided.  

      Approbation

      Competence to teach certain subject subjects at the respective level of education; subject specialisation.

       

      Catchment school (spádová škola) 

      A catchment school (spádová škola) is a school in the school catchment area of a pupil’s permanent residence.
