Main characteristics
-
In Hungary fees are charged to all students.
-
Fee differentiation is applied depending on the type of HEI, the field of study, the education programme and cycle, the student status (full-time/part-time) and the language of instruction.
-
Waivers or reductions are available and subject to specific criteria within the discretion of the HEIs.
-
Direct financial support is offered in the form of grants and loans which can be combined.
-
Indirect financial support to students and their parents is provided in the form of tax reliefs and family allowances. Other indirect financial support is also available. Tax benefits fro students with income are available until 25 years of age.
Minimum, maximum, and most common annual fee amounts (in EUR)
FEES
- The amount of fee is determined by: the type of institution (HEI), the field of study, education site, type of the programme (full-time/part time), the language of instruction.
- The academic performance may affect the student's position (state-funded or self-funded). Students may be reclassified in both directions based on academic performance. However, the amount of tuition fees per semester is not affected by the student's performance if the student is paying tuition fees.
- For students on non-state-subsidised places, the amount of the fees is determined by the type of programme.
- For higher education vocational training (short cycle), there is currently no foreign language programme.
- Students with extended length of study: a student who exceeds the standard duration of the programme is reclassified as self-funded (on non-state subsidised place).
- Full-time students studying in specific disciplines pay higher fees
- Part-time programmes do not bear higher fees.
- Data on second cycle include both master and integrated (5-6 years) programmes.
- The number of part-time international students and the number of international students in short cycle is very small and not representative.
- Waivers and reductions are applied directly by the HEIs, based on specific criteria related to the students' academic performance and/or the students' socio-economic status. HEIs may apply additional criteria for fee reduction.
Annual grant amounts (in EUR)
DIRECT FINANCIAL SUPPORT - GRANTS
-
Need-based and merit-based grants are available to full-time and part-time home and international students.
-
A student can receive both need and merit-based grants.
-
Due to the very small number of part-time students receiving grants, data on their share is not reported.
-
There is no age limit for study grants.
Annual loan amounts (in EUR)
DIRECT FINANCIAL SUPPORT - LOANS
-
Loans are available to home and international full-time and part-time students.
- There are two types of student loans: a) a loan for general purpose, with a state-subsidized interest rate. The loan can be borrowed by any student for a specified limit; b) a fixed use interest-free loan for fee payer students exclusively for the payment of the programme cost.
- The amounts reported refer to the fixed-use interest-free loan, since it can be used exclusively for study purposes and for payment of tuition fees.
- The student loan for general purpose, with a state-subsidized interest rate amounts to:
-first cycle full time students: HUF 50 000 (min); HUF 3 000 000 (max)
-first cycle part time students: HUF 50 000 (min); HUF 1 800 000 (max)
-second cycle full time students: HUF 100 000 (min); HUF 1 800 000 (max)
-second cycle part time students: HUF 60 000 (min); HUF 1 500 000 (max)
-short cycle full time students: HUF 140 000 (min); HUF 1 500 000 (max)
-short cycle part time students: HUF 100 000 (min); HUF 1 500 000 (max)
-
The number of international part-time loan borrowers is very small and hence not reported as not representative.
-
The age limit for access to loans is 45 years.
