School heads' salaries and allowances

  • School heads’ remuneration is regulated by collective agreement for all education levels.
  • The minimum qualification required for school heads at primary and secondary education levels is ISCED 7. In addition, successful completion of a one-year probationary period is required. The minimum professional experience required for school head consist of 10 years’ teaching practice plus 4 years as an assistant school head, department head, counsellor, or inclusive education coordinator. 
  • The salary progression of school heads depends is subject to satisfactory performance evaluation.
  • School heads are civil servants.

    Teachers' salaries and allowances

    • Teachers’ remuneration is regulated by collective agreement for all education levels.

    • The minimum qualification requirement for teachers at pre-primary level is ISCED 4 with 30 ECTS (or 120 ECTS at EQF 4). However, most teachers have a higher qualification: ISCED 5 with 60 ECTS at EQF 5. Teachers in primary and secondary education must have a bachelor’s degree (ISECD 6) with specialisation in education.

    • Salary progression of teachers is subject to performance evaluation.

    • Teachers have civil servant status.
