In France, the academic calendar is set by each higher education institution in accordance with its autonomy. 

The organisation of the academic year 2025/2026 is on the whole as follows:

National Information

Drop-in centers provide occasional care for children under the age of six. They allow in particular to offer children under three years of meeting time and joint activity with other children, gradually preparing them for entry to pre-primary school.

Objectives and accessibility

Childminders (assistant-es maternel-les) provide most of the ECEC for the younger group of children. Childminders are approved by the regional authorities (départment) and paid directly by the parents.

For children under the age of 3, parents are free to choose the type of childcare that suits them, between centre- or home-based provision, taking into account their availability. The different childcare centre-based settings are:

Guaranteed places

There is no guaranteed place in the early years education and care system for children under the age of 3. For all children aged 3 and over, education has been compulsory since September 2019. 

From the year of their 3rd birthday, families are therefore obliged to send their children to pre-elementary schools, except in the case of instruction in the family or ‘home schooling’ for one of the following reasons:

The national charter for early childhood care has been, since the Order on Family Services of 19 May 2021, a reference framework shared by all early childhood care settings (Article Section L214-1-1 of the Social Action and Families Code).
