      National Information

A small number of private kindergartens in Cyprus follow different pedagogical principles, such as the Montessori educational approach, or systems of other countries, such as the education system of England, the United States or Russia.

In addition, some of the private kindergartens offer education either bilingually or in a language other than Greek.

There are three kindergartens owned by the Holy Archdiocese of Cyprus, which differ in the emphasis they give to religious education and in relation to other specific aspects of the philosophy that governs them.

Home-based education and care services are defined as those that provide education or care, for profit, to children who are under the age of 5 years or who are 5 years of age but not enrolled in school. The service is provided in the child’s own home, the home of the person providing the education or care, or any other home nominated by the child’s parents or guardians.

Conferences for learning Greek in kindergarten

The directorate of the primary education of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (MESI), organized during September 2024, conferences presenting the rich material produced in the framework of the co-funded project "Learning Greek in kindergarten: Support for kindergarten teachers and third-country nationals".

In the case of communities with fewer than 10 children, regional day nurseries are established, and transport is provided free of charge by the government. There are a small number of day nurseries operating with fewer than 10 children enrolled, where the remoteness of the location does not allow for the establishment of a regional institution.

      Athletic Gymnasiums

      Currently 5 Athletic Gymnasiums (http://www.schools.ac.cy/athlitika_scholeia.html)

are operating in Cyprus in the major cities of the island with 403 students registered in 19 sports.

They all follow the program of the regular Gymnasiums, with the only exception that they have a few hours per week to practice.
