Short cycle students do not pay tuition fees in general but they are required to pay registration and admission fees and insurance. Only the Autonomous Community of Madrid and Catalonia (Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid and Cataluña) charge tuition fees in short cycle. The amounts are not subject to differentiation depending on the type of programme or field of study and the maximum fee is EUR 400.

Students with poor performance or extended length of studies, are required to pay higher fees. After the fourth time, the price stays the same. The amounts vary among the autonomous communities.

Waivers or reductions to tuition fees are available subject to evaluation of academic performance and socio-economic conditions of the students. Some autonomous communities offer grants, which include fee waivers, for students whose residency is registered in those communities.

Students with strong academic performance: students that have ended their studies with honours are entitled to tuition waiver for the first year of their next level studies. This applies also to secondary school students entering first cycle higher education programmes

Students subject to socio-economic constraints can apply for a MEFP scholarship (Ministerio de Educación y Formación Profesional). These scholarships include fee waivers for students with lower income
