Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Adult Education Teachers and Trainers in Cyprus

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for teachers and trainers in adult education is supported through a combination of state run structures, accredited professional qualifications, higher education programs, and short term training opportunities. CPD provision reflects national priorities in lifelong learning, social inclusion, and the professionalization of adult educators.
1. CPD within the Adult Education Centers (Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth)
The Adult Education Centers (AECs) constitute the main public provision for general adult education. Although the Centers do not operate a formal CPD framework for their teaching staff, they provide a structured environment that supports ongoing professional growth. The main features include:

  • Diverse teaching contexts where educators work with heterogeneous groups, including adults with limited formal education, older learners, migrants, and enclaved Cypriots.
  • Broad curriculum areas with courses which include foreign languages, ICT, arts, crafts, cultural education, health related topics, and basic skills.
  • Annual program cycle with teaching taking place from November to May, enabling continuity and reflective practice.
  • Alignment with national lifelong learning objectives: with the centers aiming to reduce educational inequalities and promote active citizenship.

CPD helps educators gain experience in adult centered pedagogy, inclusive practices, and intercultural communication. Participation in Ministry supported training initiatives is encouraged when relevant to program needs.

2. HRDA (ANAD) Certified Trainer System

The Human Resource Development Authority (HRDA/ANAD) operates the most formalized professional qualification framework for adult trainers in Cyprus. The main features include:

  • Accredited qualification such as “Trainer of Vocational Training – Level 5 (CYQF/EQF)” recognized across the lifelong learning sector
  • Structured training program (typically 90 hours) covering adult learning theory, training needs analysis, program design and delivery, assessment and evaluation, and use of digital tools in adult learning
  • Practice based methodology where training emphasizes experiential learning and reflective practice
  • Subsidized participation where eligible individuals and organizations may receive HRDA funding.

CPD provides a standardized professional profile for adult trainers. It enhances competencies in instructional design, facilitation, and evaluation. CPD is required or preferred for many roles in public and private adult education provision.

3. Higher Education Programs Related to Adult Education
Cyprus universities offer academic and professional programs that contribute to the development of adult educators. The main features include:

  • Master’s programs in adult education, training, and human resource development with specialized modules in areas such as adult learning theories, program planning and evaluation, leadership in education and digital learning environments
  • Microteaching and microlearning components, sometimes with additional certification through partner institutions.
  • Recognition for public sector employment and promotion in Cyprus and Greece.

CPD supports advanced professionalization of adult educators, and it provides research informed pedagogical training and opportunities for specialization.

4. Short Term CPD Seminars and Professional Workshops
A wide range of CPD opportunities are offered by universities, private training centers, NGOs, and professional bodies. The main features include:

  • Short courses and seminars on innovative teaching methods, digital tools, assessment, and inclusive education.
  • HRDA funded programs are available through accredited training providers.
  • Open lecture series addressing current socio economic and educational issues.
  • Tailor made training for organizations and educational institutions.

CPD enables educators to update skills regularly in response to emerging needs and offers flexible participation formats (face to face, online, hybrid).
