This section provides the most recent available data on the number of educational institutions from pre-primary to upper education level (ISCED levels 0-3). Statistics on numbers and characteristics of higher education institutions can be found in the European Tertiary Education Register. A general overview of the categories of institutions providing publicly-subsidised adult education and training can be found in the chapter on adult education. The notes below the tables provide methodological explanations necessary for a good interpretation of data.

Notes:
- Counting approach: the legal entity approach is applied for all levels.
- To prevent dubble counting, General and lower secondary schools have been merged. Two schools (Gymnasium, Formatio) offer an integrated programme covering lower and general upper secondary education (ISICED 2 and 3) leading to general baccalaureate. Due to distribution of grades (Grade 1-4 = lower secondary, Grade 5-7 = upper secondary= most pupils at those schools are at lower secondary level.
- Private Schools offer programms on several levels (ISCED 0,1,2,3). They are integrated in the categories according to the number of pupils at each level:
- Waldorfschule - Primary Level
- Formatio - Secondary Level
- The code (-) 'Not applicable' is applied where there are no such institutions in Liechtenstein. Vocational upper secondary schools are not included in the table for this reason, as there are no such schools in Liechtenstein although 50% of a given age group attend such schools as part of their VET programme (Berufslehre).
- At upper secondary and higher education level Liechtenstein is a contributor/co-owner of institutions in Switzerland. Those Institutions are not considered here.
