2.8Statistics on educational institutions

This section provides the most recent available data on the number of educational institutions at early childhood, primary and secondary education levels (ISCED levels 0-3). Statistics on numbers and characteristics of higher education (ISCED levels 5-8) institutions can be found in the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER). A general overview of the categories of institutions providing adult education and vocational training can be found in the chapter on the main providers of adult education. The notes below the tables provide methodological explanations necessary for a good interpretation of data.

Terminology

The 2021 version of the Unesco/OECD/Eurostat Manual on concepts, definitions and classifications can be consulted for the definitions of regular education (pp.19-20); general and vocational programmes of education (pp. 21-22); as well as public institution, government-dependent private institution and private independent institution (pp. 26-29).

Notes

The data in this table were collected on the basis of accounting by institution, understood as legal entities.

Early childhood education institutions: institutions with only early childhood education children (ISCED 0).

Primary education institutions: institutions with primary education students (ISCED 1), although they may also have early childhood education children (ISCED 0).

Primary and compulsory secondary education institutions: institutions with primary education (ISCED 1) and compulsory secondary education (ISCED 2 and 3) students, although they may also have early childhood education students (ISCED 0).

Secondary education institutions: institutions enrolling students in one or more of the ESO (compulsory secondary education) programmes (ISCED 2 and 3), bachillerato studies (ISCED 3) and vocational education and training cycles (ISCED 3 and 5).

Primary and secondary education institutions: institutions with students in primary education (ISCED 1), secondary education (ISCED 2 and 3) and students in one or more of the following programmes: bachillerato (ISCED 3) and vocational training cycles (ISCED 4 and 5); they may also have pupils in pre-primary education (ISCED 0).
