2.8Statistics on Educational Institutions

Last update: 14 February 2024

This section provides the most recent available data on the number of educational institutions from pre-primary to post-secondary non-tertiary education level (ISCED levels 0-4). Statistics on numbers and characteristics of higher education institutions can be found in the European Tertiary Education Register. A general overview of the categories of institutions providing publicly-subsidised adult education and training can be found in the chapter on adult education. The notes below the tables provide methodological explanations necessary for a good interpretation of data.

The tables below present the numbers of legal entities, thus not the local sites.

Notes

The inclusive primary school is a merger between a public special needs primary school and a Government-dependent mainstream primary school, thus run together by two providers. An inclusive school, children with and without special educational needs are educated in class groups, small groups or in individual care with the support of non-teaching staff of the special needs school such as paramedical staff and nurses.

Strictly private schools recognised by the Community are almost non-existent.
