 Responsibilities for Education in Belgium

The responsibilities for education in Belgium are distributed within the federal system, with the German-speaking Community having independent responsibility for the education sector in East Belgium.

With the start of the new legislative period in 2024, two ministers will bear political responsibility for the area of "adult education and training":

  • Jérôme Franssen (CSP): Minister for Education, Training, and Employment. His responsibilities include, in addition to employment policy, the education system from kindergarten to upper secondary school, formal adult education in school-based further education, vocational training for small and medium-sized enterprises, and the Autonomous University of East Belgium.
  • Gregor Freches (PFF): Minister for Culture, Sport, Tourism, and Media. His responsibilities also include the subsidised non-formal adult education institutions.
