Last update: 11 March 2025

As regards the study programmes in some study fields, the study is not divided into the first and second cycle, they may be combined into a single whole. The possibility of combining first and second degree study programmes is regulated by the Decree of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic No. 244/2019 Coll. on the System of Study Fields of the Slovak Republic (vyhláška Ministerstva školstva, vedy, výskumu a športu SR č. 244/2019 Z. z. o sústave študijných odborov SR).

The conditions of admission are the same as those for the Bachelor study programmes. For more information, see chapter 7.2.1 Bachelor.

Study programmes that combine the first and the second-cycle programmes correspond to the 7th level of the National Qualifications Framework/European Qualifications Framework. In the study fields of physics, theology, speech therapy and therapeutic pedagogy, teaching and pedagogical sciences, and veterinary medicine, it is possible to combine first degree and second degree study programmes into a single unit. In the study fields of pharmacy, general medicine and dentistry, it is not possible to study separately in first-degree and second-degree study programmes, i.e. all of these study programmes are structured in the form of study programmes combining first and second degree. It is not possible to combine the first and the second cycle in any other study fields.

The standard period of a study programme combining the first and second cycle study is 5 to 6 years. The number of credits required for the completion of the study is 300 credits (5-year study programmes) or 360 credits (6-year study programmes).

Graduates of such study programmes acquire the second level of higher education. The study is completed by the state examination before the examination commission. The examination includes the thesis defence. Higher education institutions award the following academic titles to the graduates:

  • Master "magister" (Mgr.),
  • In human medicine programmes Doctor of General Medicine "doktor všeobecného lekárstva" (MUDr.), Doctor of Dental Medicine "doktor zubného lekárstva" (MDDr.) and in veterinary medicine programmes Doctor of Veterinary Medicine "doktor veterinárskej medicíny" (MVDr.).

For more information see chapter 7.3 Second-cycle programmes.
