Adult education in public or state-subsidized institutions 

School-based education 

Lifelong learning is provided within the network of schools and school facilities by basic schools, secondary schools, vocational secondary schools, conservatories, schools for children and pupil with special educational needs, basic arts schools, and language schools .

Basic schools 

  • second-chance education programmes aimed at completing primary and lower secondary education after the end of compulsory school attendance. 
  • external testing for the purpose of obtaining lower secondary education.

 

Secondary schools 

  • so-called F-programs for individuals who were unable to complete lower secondary education and want to do so, 
  • accredited educational programmes designed to provide relevant professional qualifications at the level of secondary vocational or full secondary vocational education, 
  • follow-up forms of vocational education to expand and deepen acquired secondary education (full-time, part-time, or combined), 
  • 2-year part-time study at gymnasiums leading to the acquisition of a school-leaving certificate (complete general secondary education),
  • micro-credentials.

 

Language schools 

  • language education (state language exam). 

 

Basic arts schools 

  • education in arts (extracurricular education).

 

Higher education 

 

Higher education institutions 

  • micro-credentials,
  • Universities of the Third Age (lifelong learning).

 

Adult Education at independent institutions 

 

Any institution (legal entity or self-employed individual) that wishes to provide publicly funded adult education or accredited educational programmes must undergo a certification process and be registered in the registry of certified educational institutions.

Certified educational institutions provide education in non-accredited educational programmes or in accredited educational programmes leading to the acquisition of professional qualifications in accordance with published qualification standards. 

Institutions operating in the field of education are also members of the Association of Adult Education Institutions (Asociácii inštitúcií vzdelávania dospelých).

 

Adult education provided by the Offices of Labour, Social Affairs, and Family

 

The Offices of Labour, Social Affairs, and Family provide educational opportunities for job seekers. This is done based on an assessment of their abilities, work experience, professional skills, level of education, and medical fitness for work. Training is provided to job seekers free of charge under an agreement concluded with the labour office.
