6.6The organisation of the academic year

The organisation of the academic year 2025/2026 in Latvia is as follows:

Beginning of the academic year	September; some institutions set start of the academic year by the end of August
Period(s) when there are teaching activities	Two semesters - usually organised from September to December and from February to May
Period(s) of examination	Institutions fix periods of examinations. Usually examinations proceed after the teaching activity period and take place in January/February and June/July
End of the academic year	The academic year generally ends after the last examination of spring or summer semester
Breaks between the teaching activities excluding the examination period, if longer than a week	usually one week around Christmas/New Year and another one at Easter
