The organisation of the academic year 2024/2025 in Czechia is as follows: 

Higher Education Institutions 

Beginning of the academic year The academic year usually begins during September or early October; institutions are autonomous in setting the start of the academic year.
Periods when there are teaching activities Teaching activity is organised by semester. All periods of teaching activity and holidays are fixed by institutions in internal regulations. 
Period(s) of examination Examination periods are fixed by institutions in internal regulations.
End of the academic year Institutions are autonomous in setting the end of the academic year. The academic year ends on the day before the new one begins.
Breaks between the teaching activities excluding the examination period, if significant All periods of teaching activity and holidays are fixed by institutions in internal regulations.  

 

Tertiary professional schools

Beginning of the academic year Usually September but October is also possible (the beginning of the teaching period is set by the school head in accordance with the accredited educational programme).
Period(s) when there are teaching activities 

All periods of teaching activity and holidays are fixed by institutions in internal regulations. The exact dates of teaching activity are set by the school head in accordance with the educational programme, the period of teaching must be 40 weeks per academic year (32 for teaching at school, 6 for self-study and examinations and 2 weeks of time reserve).

The exact days of holidays are set by the school head in accordance with the accredited educational programme. At least 4 weeks are set for holidays.

Period(s) of examination The exact days are set by the school head in accordance with the accredited educational programme.
End of the academic year Last day of August
Breaks between the teaching activities excluding the examination period, if significant At least 4 weeks are set for holidays but the exact days of holidays are set by the school head in accordance with the accredited educational programme. 

 

 

 

Note: The information relating to higher education institutions is governed by the Higher Education Act. For tertiary professional schools (ISCED 655), the start of the academic year is on 1 September as decided by the top-level authority in the Education Act. The Decree on tertiary professional schools gives the school head the authority to further specify the actual beginning according to the accredited study programme.

Both the HEIs and tertiary professional schools have an autonomy in deciding the exact teaching periods in the actual year. At tertiary professional schools, the teaching period may also start in October.
