9.8Conditions of service for teachers and trainers working in adult education and training

Last update: 27 November 2023

Teaching staff working in Adult Education are employed on an annual definite contract basis and are paid at an hourly rate of €11.65. There is no distinction between the paying rate of an adult educator and a coordinator. Their employment follows a call of applications by the Directorate for Research, Lifelong Learning and Employability  within the Ministry for Education and Employment (MEDE). After sitting for an interview the results are published in order of merit and applicants chosen according to this list and demand as projected by DLLL. Results are valid for two years. Adult courses usually take place in the evenings between 17.00 and 20.00 hours at the Evening Classes Centres managed by the Directorate although several courses take place in the community mainly at 27 Local Council premises, within 12 NGOs and other entities that are acknowledged by the Directorate. Working hours are flexible and time must be effectively divided between office duties to organise and plan training and logistical work as well as class support visits and overseeing the smooth running of adult courses. A rolling call of applications is issued each year for both teachers and teacher trainers. Holders of either of the posts are guided by the Assistant Director and the Education Officer for Lifelong Learning and are accountable to the Director for Research, Lifelong Learning and Employability.
