Romania - Teachers' salaries and allowances

National information

Romania - Teachers' salaries and allowances

Teachers' salaries and allowances

  • Teachers’ remuneration is regulated by top-level authorities for all education levels.
  • For pre-primary and primary education, the minimum qualification requirement for teachers is at ISCED 3. However, most teachers have a bachelors’ degree (ISCED 6). For secondary education, the minimum qualification requirement is ISCED 6, and teachers have to undertake a module on psycho-pedagogy.
  • Salary progression of teachers depends on the qualification level and level of seniority. Four different career levels exist (beginner teacher, teacher, teacher with teaching level I and teacher with teaching level II). The starting salary corresponds to the salary of a beginner teacher, and the salaries after 10 years, 15 years and at the top of the scale correspond to those of a teacher. The upper career levels are not defined centrally.
  • Teachers are civil servants (contracting staff).
