National information

Belgium - German-Speaking Community - Teachers' salaries and allowances

Teachers' salaries and allowances

  • Teachers’ remuneration is regulated by top level community authorities.
  • The minimum qualification requirements to enter the profession for teachers at upper secondary level is ISCED 7 and for all other levels is ISCED 6.
  • The salary progression of teachers is based on number of years in service. The qualification level also plays a role: for pre-primary, primary and lower secondary level, the bachelor level is requested and all teachers which bachelor degree as ITE receive the same salary (from pre-primary to lower secondary). For the upper secondary level, a master's degree is requested. Teachers with master degree get a higher salary (even if teaching in lower ISCED levels).
  • Fully qualified teachers have a civil servant status. The teachers are first recruited as 'temporary' and after a certain time can be appointed as civil servants.
