Last update: 10 June 2025

The organisation of the academic year 2025/2026 in The Netherlands is as follows:

Beginning of academic year 1 September
Period(s) when there are teaching activities

Institutions individually and autonomously determine the periods with teaching activity. Generally, institutions work with two semesters, each consisting of two sub-periods. The winter semester generally runs from 1 September until 31 January, and the summer semester from 1 February until the end of June/beginning of July. The lenght of the semesters is determined individually and autonomously by the institutions. Some institutions may choose to work with trimesters.

additional note: some courses start in the course of the academic year, on 1 February.

Period(s) of examination

Institutions individually and autonomously determine both the length and dates of the periods of examination. These generally take place at the end of each sub-period.

additional note: during the periods of examination, teaching activity may stop so the students can devote their time specifically towards the preparation of their exams.

End of the academic year 31 August
Breaks between the teaching activities excluding the examination period

Insitutions individually and autonomously determine their breaks. These generally include the following public holidays:

25 and 26 December 2025 (Christmas Days)
31 December 2025 (New Year’s Eve)
1 January 2026 (New Year's Day)
6 April 2026 (Easter Monday)
27 April 2026 (King’s Birthday)
5 May 2026 (Liberation Day)
14 May 2026 (Ascension Day)
25 May 2026 (Whit Monday)
