Adult education

There are no specific regulations on academic guidance in the legislation concerning adult education. The language providers often organize a form of guidance, for example in identifying the training needs and learning needs or to assess the best follow-up training.

Psychological Guidance

Adult education

There are no specific regulations on psychological counselling in the legislation concerning adult education. This does not mean that it does not happen in institutions. Schools and institutions are autonomous in deciding this.

From School to Sustainable Work Act

The From School to Sustainable Work Act will take effect on January 1, 2026. This act focuses on improving the transition from school to work for young people up to 27 years old, especially those at risk of falling behind in the labor market. The goal is to better align vocational education and training (MBO) with the needs of the labor market and to support young people in finding and keeping jobs. Schools, Transition Centers, and municipalities will be responsible for helping young people with and without qualifications to find a sustainable job. Four key measures are proposed: additional career guidance in schools, guidance for young people without qualifications provided by Transition Centers, more support for municipalities, and improved cooperation between education, Transition Centers, and municipalities at the regional level.

VAVO (Adult general secondary education)

In secondary education attention is paid to career orientation - and guidance (LOB – Loopbaanoriëntatie – en begeleiding).

In the renewed VMBO extra attention will be paid to the transition from VMBO to MBO. Still too many pupils fall out when they make this transition. Career orientation and guidance will be a mandatory part of the new vocational curriculum (with the exception of VMBO-tl). So that students learn to make conscious choices and thus be better prepared for further education. The new set-up of VMBO will start in the school year 2016/2017.
