Last update: 18 April 2025

The following sections describe the appointment procedures and the conditions of services of management and other non-teaching staff involved in the education and training system, adult education included.

At pre-primary, primary and secondary level, school managers (Dirigenti scolastici) occupy the leadership role, while the Director for general and administrative services (Direttore dei servizi generali e amministrativi - DSGA) carries out the administrative functions  together with the administrative-technical-auxiliary staff (ausiliario-tecnico-amministrativo, ATA).

Managers with technical functions (inspectors) of the Ministry of education and merit are one of the three subjects involved in the National evaluation system for assuring the quality of the education system.

Management at universities involves both the university level (Ateneo) and the department level: the Rector, who is the legal representative of the university, the Board of directors, the Director general, the Assessment team, the Department Council and the Director of the Department. In the institutions of the Higher education for the fine arts, music and dance (Alta formazione artistica, musicale e coreutica - AFAM), the Director occupies a leadership role while the President represents the institution.
Details on the functions and commitments of the management staff in schools and higher institutions are available in the section on administration and governance at institutional level.

Provincial centres for adult education (Centri provinciali per l'istruzione degli adulti - CPIA) are autonomous institutions with their own management, collegiate bodies and staff. In the case of adult education offered by upper secondary schools, management and other education and non-education staff are the same of the school.
