9.4Initial education for academic staff in higher education

Last update: 27 November 2023

There are no special programmes for the initial education of future academic staff in higher education. Likewise, there are no requirements concerning particular subjects during studies, such as psychology, pedagogy, teaching methodology or other education related subjects.

Admission criteria to higher education institutions for those planning to pursue academic career is equivalent to those anticipated for any other student applying for a higher education programme (for more details, see the section on Higher Education). Typically, a PhD degree is required for those applying for academic staff positions, although persons with lower degree levels may apply for some positions, as explained in the Entry to the Profession section. The duration of initial education for academic staff is usually 8 years (3 or 4 years of a Bachelor degree programme + 1 or 2 years of a Master degree programme + 3 years of a PhD degree programme).

Research work and the publication of scientific papers are highly valued for students aiming for academic career.
