8.6Continuing professional development for academic staff working in higher education

Organisational aspects

For teachers working at tertiary level within the period of six years after the election to the academic post, one of the following in-service training programmes has to be completed once in a period:

  • innovations in higher education system,
  • didactics of higher education,
  • management of educational work.

This is a professional task.

According to the Regulations on the Necessary Academic and Professional Qualifications of Pedagogues and Professional Competence Development Procedures for Pedagogues (2014)/ Noteikumi par pedagogiem nepieciešamo izglītību un profesionālo kvalifikāciju un pedagogu profesionālās kompetences pilnveides kārtību, issued by the Cabinet of Ministers, the amount of the programme has to be 160 academic hours (of them at least 60 contact hours).The organisers and providers are tipically within the institution.

Incentives for participation in continuing professional development (CPD) activities

Responsibility of a rector of a higher education institution includes promotion of the development of the staff and ensuring the academic freedom of the academic staff. The results of CPD activities do not reflect in teacher salaries.
