Management Staff for Higher Education

At public higher education institutions, the Minister of Education, Science and Culture appoints a Rector for a five-year term according to the university council’s nomination. The university council sets rules for the Rector’s appointment procedure and may for instance decide to appoint a Rector by election or by advertising the post. The Rector is the chairman of the university council and has initiavive of marking its policy. Rector is furthermore the head of the administrative sector of the university and sets the direction for its overall operations, including hiring procedures, financial policies of individual schools and departments and oversees operational plans for the whole university upon approval from the university council. There are no specific rules for the appointment of Rectors of private higher education institutions in Iceland.
