9.3Education staff responsible for guidance in early childhood and school education

In general, every pupil and student have the right to receive guidance from all members of the school or educational institution staff.

Guidance Counsellors

Guidance counsellors play an important role in supporting pupils and students throughout their education. They help learners grow, succeed in their studies, and plan for the future. This includes identifying strengths, developing study skills, and exploring options for further education and careers.

Main tasks of guidance counsellors

  • Advise pupils and students on course and subject choices
  • Help them develop study skills and effective learning methods
  • Organise workplace visits and guidance periods to connect education with working life
  • Work closely with teachers, school management, welfare staff, and parents

Qualification Requirements

For comprehensive and general upper secondary schools:

  • A master’s degree
  • Guidance counsellor studies (60 ECTS credits)

For vocational institutions:

  • Teaching qualification for vocational subjects or common core subjects
  • Completion of guidance counsellor studies (60 ECTS credits), offered by a university or a vocational teacher education institution
