            • The minimum qualification for school heads is ISCED 6 at all education levels. For recruitment 3 years in service is required. After a 2-year internship, school heads can be permanently appointed, provided they have successfully completed the initial training modules for school heads and have at least 6 years’ experience.
            • Salary progression is based on seniority in teaching or public administration in general. There is a first increase at 1 year of seniority, a second at 2 years, a third at 5 years of seniority followed by increase every 2 years of seniority for all scales, and at 27 years for scales attributed to directors with a bachelor's degree. Another increase is provided at age 61 and 62.

                    • School heads’ remuneration is regulated by central/state or top-level authorities for all education levels.
                    • The minimum qualification requirement for school heads at all levels is ISCED 7. In addition, at ISCED 02 and 1, they must pass a competitive exam for teachers and have a 2-year teaching experience to be able to appear on a "liste d'aptitude" for a position as a school head. At ISCED 24 and 34, they must pass a competitive exam for school heads and have a 4-year experience as a teacher (or as a civil servant who have attained the 'hors échelle A' (HEA) grade).
                    • The salary progression of school heads is based on steps (échelons) within the grade scale. The steps are associated with a fixed statutory salary. Management staff with at least 8 years in ‘clasee normale’ can have access to the 'hors-classe' scale. The heads who have reached the 5th step of the 'hors-classe' scale and have fulfilled additional conditions are eligible for a ‘classe spéciale’. The progression is fixed and regular.
