Regeringen (the Swedish government) implements the parliament's decisions and draws up proposals for new laws and law amendments. The parliament appoints a prime minister who is given the task of forming a government. The government is assisted in its work by the government offices and around 340 public authorities.

Riksdagen (the Swedish parliament) has legislative power. It has 349 members representing different political parties that are elected through general elections every fourth year. The number of members each party is represented by depends on the proportion of votes it receives in the election. A party needs to receive at least four percent of the votes to be included in the parliament.

Arbetsmarknadsdepartementet (Ministry of Employment) deals with issues that concern a well-functioning labour market. This includes measures to get young people into work, matching, labour-market policy programmes, unemployment insurance as well as issues on labour law and work environment. The Ministry is also responsible for coordinating the introduction of newly arrived immigrants.

Skolverket (the Swedish National Agency for Education) is the central administrative authority for the Swedish school and preschool system. The agency is under the Ministry of Education and Research (Utbildningsdepartementet) and actively works for the attainment of the goals and guidelines that the parliament and the government set out, i.a. the Education Act and the curricula.
