Pupils who are not ready to go back to school following hospital treatment may receive lessons at home. Teachers at the type of school which the pupil is to attend after his or her convalescence are employed to this end, thus effectively working towards the pupil's reintegration.

According to the regulations of the Länder, pupils who are in medical institutions for six weeks or more, or repeatedly, and therefore cannot attend classes at school, may receive hospital tuition.

Pupils who cannot attend school for a longer period or even permanently, due to illness, without requiring hospitalisation, should also be taught at home. This depends on their ability to follow lessons. This, and the pupil's physical capacity, is certified by a doctor.

As a rule, International Schools in Germany cater for primary as well as secondary school pupils. In particular, the five European Schools offer a European education model. Teaching is available in the official languages of all EU countries, from kindergarten or primary school to the European Baccalaureate in various language sections. 

The Staatliche Europa-Schule Berlin (SESB) is a “School of Special Educational Character” and a network of bilingual classes at 33 schools with approximately 6,000 students. According to the principle of dual immersion, a continuous bilingual education is offered in two equally important languages (German and one of nine other languages) from the first grade up to the Abitur.
