Key features of the education system

The provision of free of charge education for all citizens and at all levels of the public education system is a constitutional principle of the Greek State.

The Greek educational system is centralised. National laws, presidential decrees and ministerial acts lay out the overall educational strategy and key objectives of the education system. 

Additional teaching support - prostheti didaktiki stirixi (πρόσθετη διδακτική στήριξη)

Additional teaching support (prostheti didaktiki stirixi) is applied in lykeio (upper secondary school).  This institution is available to any pupil lagging behind in school performance, not being able to follow and participate effectively in the educational process or for any pupil wishing to improve his/her performance.

Development of a mechanism for monitoring the participation of adults in Lifelong Learning programmes
The Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports is currently organising a system for collecting the required data from all Lifelong Learning providers (Ministries, Organisations, Private Bodies) and in cooperation with the Hellenic Statistical Service (ELSTAT).

Strengthening the network of Model Schools by establishing 22 Onassis Schools (Law 5174/2025)

Operation of a single network of Model Public Schools (Gymnasiums and Lyceums), with a social character, called "Public Onassis Schools". This includes 22 existing secondary education units, i.e. 11 Secondary Schools and 11 High Schools.

This chapter provides a thematic and chronological overview of national reforms and policy developments since 2022.

The introduction of the chapter describes the overall education strategy and the key objectives across the whole education system. It also looks at how the education reform process is organised and who are the main actors in the decision-making process.
