Slovak education staff will see a significant improvement in their remuneration. Parliament has approved an increase in teacher salaries and has introduced a new remuneration system that takes into account their quality and performance. At the same time, the Ministry is preparing further measures to improve working conditions in schools and to strengthen the attractiveness of the teaching profession.

According to the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic, the amendment responds to the need to create an attractive and stable working environment for all employees in the education system. From September 2025, their wages will increase by 7% and by a further 7% from January 2026. The changes also apply to non-teaching staff, who will be subject to a new special pay scale.

A new staff appraisal allowance is also being introduced from September 2027, which will allow for targeted remuneration based on the quality of teachers' work. Teachers will be appraised on five grades ranging from outstanding to unsatisfactory work performance. This will provide school heads with an effective tool to motivate and develop their teams.

Each school will set its own evaluation criteria to ensure that the system reflects its specific conditions and needs. In total, 132.5 million euro has been earmarked for the new allowance to motivate teachers for better results and personal growth.

The ministry also plans to introduce measures to strengthen the quality of teaching and support teachers in their daily work. One of these is the possibility to obtain qualifications in shortage subjects more quickly through flexible training programmes.

At the same time, a new position - teacher candidate - will be introduced. This will enable bachelor students to actively participate in the teaching process and gain valuable experience during their studies.
