Starting from the 1st of January 2025, kindergartens in Slovakia will be financed from the state budget. Responsibility for funding pre-primary education will thus shift from local self-governments to the state.

The amendment to Act No. 597/2003 Coll. on the financing of primary schools, secondary schools, and school facilities aims to create a transparent and differentiated system of pre-primary education and to ensure stability, resilience, and the purposeful allocation of funds for education. Like primary and secondary schools – which are funded according to the number of pupils and personnel and economic requirements of the educational process – kindergartens and special kindergartens will be financed through a normative system.

Funds will be provided to founders via regional school administration offices based on the founder’s location, in an amount determined by the ministry.
