News from Greece: Foundation of the University of West Attica

05 April 2018
Country news

The Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs establishes the University of West Attica.  The aim is to strengthen Higher Education Institutions, so as to be able to meet the economic and social needs at local and national level, but also become internationally competitive at scientific, research and academic level.

The University of West Attica will be the third largest higher education institution in student numbers, after the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

The structure of the new University depends strictly on academic criteria.  Departments are formed, many of which cover new cognitive fields, consistent and compatible with the developments in science and the corresponding international study programmes, but also intertwined with the local and national needs at cutting-edge economic and social sectors for the country.  Hence, the academic units will have the prospect of a strong presence in the Greek and International arena.
