To give all upper secondary school pupils a greater insight into the world of work, two schemes are introduced during the 2023-2024 school year:

An internship for all students in the "seconde générale et technologique" (general and technological first year of upper secondary school):

To improve the career guidance policy for young people and make the link between schools and all employers more dynamic, an internship will be introduced for all pupils in the first year of upper secondary school, from June 2024, for a period of two weeks (the second half of June). An agreement must be signed between the school and the employer. Internship offers are published on an online platform from the end of March.

This compulsory observation placement takes place in companies, associations, government departments, public institutions or local authorities. The following students are exempted from this observation period: students in the first year of technological upper secondary school in hotel and catering stream, students who have taken part in a cohesion trip, a mission of general interest as part of the ‘universal national service’, a European or international mobility for at least two weeks during the same school year, and students on a study trip organised by their school during the same scheduled period of internship.

A business office in every vocational upper secondary school:

At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, as part of the reform of vocational "lycées", a business office was set up in each upper secondary school. This is a one-stop location for organising and developing partnerships with professional players for the benefit of all those attending vocational or multi-purpose "lycées": pupils, apprentices, students and continuing vocational trainees. On the other hand, this office is the single point of entry for each company to facilitate the development of joint initiatives with the upper secondary schools.

Each Business Office has five missions:

  • To support teachers and trainers in their interactions with the business world;

  • Setting up joint initiatives between the school, the business world and local players;

  • A resource for finding and successfully completing high-quality work placements, periods of on-the-job training and work-linked courses;

  • Developing a sense of belonging to the vocational upper secondary school and an alumni network;

  • Monitoring the success of the career paths and integration of each person trained at the school.
