Cyprus introduces a new teacher evaluation system

04 November 2019
Country news

A new teacher evaluation system will be implemented in Cyprus during the academic year 2020-2021. The main purpose of the system is the development of a teacher and school evaluation plan that will contribute to enhancing the quality of provided education. The process of teacher evaluation is based on transparency and dialogue between all stakeholders. In the same vein, the plan follows the principle that "everyone who evaluates is evaluated". Continuous Professional Improvement (CPD), through formative assessment, and the teacher's opportunities for development begin with the integration of the teacher into the system and end with retirement.

The plan includes support processes for teachers and schools through formative assessment and school project evaluation, as well as provisions for the support of new entrants, contractors and replacements.

The main innovations of the evaluation system include:

  1. Provisions for continuous support of teachers in all stages of their career. To this end, the plan will include formative assessment of teachers related to support programs.
  2. Establishing a new mechanism for selecting the most appropriate teachers for promotion.
  3. Creation of evaluator posts.
  4. Adopting essential measurable criteria for teachers’ abilities in carrying out their duties.
