Belgium (German-Speaking Community): Reforming teacher education

From the 2025/2026 academic year, the Autonome Hochschule Ostbelgien (AHS) will introduce a rigorous reform to its teacher education program. Aspiring primary school teachers and kindergarten educators will complete a four-year bachelor’s degree instead of the current three-year program.
This reform, announced in the new government’s Policy Declaration (2024–2029), is aimed at better preparing new teachers for the increasing challenges of their profession. The key changes include:
-
Extended practical training: Practical placements will now comprise 25% of the program (60 out of 240 ECTS credits), providing students with more hands-on experience in schools.
-
Broader skill development: The curriculum will include new skills such as time management, stress management, and strategies for dealing with diverse classrooms. Additionally, French language training will be enhanced.
The new structure aligns with international standards, as most OECD countries already require four years of teacher education. This initiative aims to ensure that future educators are well-equipped to address the evolving demands of schools and society in the German-speaking Community of Belgium.
