Belgium (German-Speaking Community): DuO-grants to launch careers in high-demand fields

The German-speaking community in Belgium introduced the DuO-grants to support education and training in high-demand fields. The initiative offers financial aid in exchange for a commitment to work locally afterward, aiming to strengthen the regional workforce.
For the first time, the German-speaking Community awarded the so-called DuO-grants during the 2023-2024 school year. Out of 388 submitted applications, 360 met the eligibility criteria.
Introduced in the summer of 2023, the DuO-grants program provides financial support for individuals pursuing studies or training in professions facing labour shortages. Recipients receive €350 per month, with applications valid for one school or academic year. Grants can be renewed for the duration of the study or training program. In return, recipients commit to working in the region for a specified period after completing their education. This program is inspired by a similar system in South Tyrol.
The majority of applications for study grants came from students training to become primary school and kindergarten teachers, followed by those studying nursing and health care. In vocational training, most applications were submitted by prospective electricians, carpenters, landscape gardeners, and automotive mechanics.
This initiative aims to address the region’s workforce challenges while encouraging local talent to contribute to the community’s development.
