This publication focuses on the current structure of Austria’s day care centres (crèches, kindergartens, after-school care clubs and mixed-age child care facilities). Trends are revealed using time series of child care facilities for the federal provinces.

The care of children in elementary educational institutions became a priority topic of educational and social policy in recent months. In this context the availibilty of ressources, child care quotas and costs are examples of topics, which has been discussed with a head attention on regional aspects. This volume represents an important decision-making tool for institutional family policy and documents, broken down by province and type of child care, data is provided on the number of day care centres (crèches, kindergartens, after-school care centers and mixed-age care centers), opening times, days of closure, etc. for the 2022/23 reporting year. The children looked after in day care centres are characterised by age, citizenship and length of attendance at the centre. The survey results are concluded by a staff table showing day care staff by age, employment status and gender.

With this publication, Statistics Austria continues a series that has been available since 1972. Based on the Federal Statistics Act 2000, this publication is published in cooperation with the federal provinces on direct order of the Federal Chancellery, Section VI, Families and Youth.

Education in Figures provides a comprehensive overview of the educational situation in Austria. Selected educational indicators with short analytical background texts provide information on different educational areas such as school and university systems, adult education, educational pathways, the level of education and government spending on education. Education in Figures 2022/23 pays particular attention to in-depth analyses of success in the educational process.

Characteristics of the educational situation in the nine federal states can be found in a separate chapter. In addition to this, a separate volume of tables offers extensive detailed data from the fields of school and university statistics and additional key data on the educational level of the resident population and on state education expenditure.

With this publication, Statistics Austria continues the series on education statistics.

This study analyses how different types of system-level (or ‘landscape’) structural reforms in higher education have been designed and implemented in selected higher education systems. In the 12 case studies that form the core of the project, the researchers examine reforms aimed at: • Increasing horizontal differentiation between different types of higher education institutions (for example reforms to introduce or modify the role of universities of applied science); • Increasing vertical differentiation through increasing or decreasing positional or status differences between higher education institutions (for example, reforms aimed at concentrating research in a limited number of universities) and; • Changing institutional interrelationships between higher education institutions (for example, through mergers, the formation of associations of institutions).In each case, the researchers set out to understand the origins and objectives of the reforms examined, the why they were designed and implemented, the extent to which they achieved their objectives and the factors affecting success or failure. The overall objective is to provide policy makers at the European, national and institutional levels with policy relevant conclusions concerning the design, implementation and evaluation of structural reforms.

The annual Austrian Research and Technology Reports are dedicated to current national and international research and technology policy issues by analyzing current developments and trends and preparing extensive data material on research and development. Since 2020, an annual monitoring of the eleven central research and research funding institutions listed in the Research Funding Act has been part of the report, which provides an overall systemic view of state-funded research funding and implementation.

The legal basis for the preparation of research and technology reports can be found in the Research Organization Act (FOG), Federal Law Gazette No. 341/1981. In accordance with Section 8 (1), the respective Federal Ministers for Education, Science and Research, in agreement with the respective Federal Ministers for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology and the respective Federal Ministers for Labour and Economics, must submit a status report on federally funded research, technology and innovation in Austria to the National Council by 1 June of each year. In accordance with § 8 (2), a comprehensive report on the needs of research, technology and innovation in Austria must be submitted by the Federal Government to the National Council every three years.

The Austrian University Development Plan (GUEP) is a technical-strategic planning instrument of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) that serves to shape the overall Austrian university landscape. It serves as the basis for the development plans and performance agreements of public universities.
Since its first version in 2015, the so-called "Austrian University Development Plan" (GUEP) has been the technical-strategic planning instrument on which the further development and strategic orientation of the 22 public universities in Austria is based. This is done by the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) - through a written consultation process involving all key stakeholders - defining system objectives that affect the overall structure of the Austrian university landscape.

The Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) is carrying out the Student Social Survey 2023 on behalf of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF).

The survey, which has been carried out at regular intervals since the 1970s and covers a wide spectrum of topics relating to the social situation of students, is one of the most important sources of information and a key decision basis for higher education policy in Austria. The survey is being supervised by a project advisory board containing representatives of the Universities Austria Association (uniko), the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences in Austria (FHK), the Rectors’ Conference of Austrian Universities of Education (RÖPH), the Conference of Austrian Private Universities (ÖPUK), the Austrian Union of Students (ÖH), the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria (AQ Austria) and the Austrian Science Board. In May 2023, all students in Austria received an e-mail from their higher education institution inviting them to participate in the online survey.

The results of the survey will be published in summer 2024.
