As of the start of November 2024, new measures for the assessment of pupils and students in primary and secondary education have been implemented in Italy.

At primary level, the periodic and final assessment of pupils’ learning and conduct are now expressed through summary judgements (excellent, good, fair, sufficient, insufficient, seriously insufficient) instead of the existing descriptive judgements. The judgements are supplemented by a detailed description of the level of learning achieved by the pupil in each discipline.

At secondary level, students’ assessment is based on marks out of ten. If the student’s behaviour is assessed less than six tenths in the final evaluation, they may not progress to the next grade or may not be admitted to the final state exam. If the mark is equal to six tenths, the student is assigned the task of writing a critical essay on active and supportive citizenship. Submission of the essay and a satisfactory assessment are required to ensure continuation to the next academic year and eligibility for the final examination.
