Ireland: Addressing cyberbullying through provision of teacher training and guidance
Over 600 teachers have participated in training programs focused on addressing cyberbullying, provided by Oide, the Department of Education’s professional development service.
These online courses, developed in collaboration with Webwise, aim to equip educators with a solid understanding of cyberbullying and effective response strategies. The training updates teachers on the latest research regarding cyberbullying and offers guidance on managing incidents, communicating with those involved, and integrating lessons on the topic into the curriculum.
To date, 210 primary-level teachers and 438 post-primary teachers have completed the courses. Cyberbullying can significantly impact students' well-being, making it crucial for educators to be prepared to address such issues. The ongoing training is available to teachers at any time, with unlimited spaces and certificates awarded upon completion. The Department of Education plans to introduce additional courses to further support educators.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts to prevent and address bullying in schools, ensuring student well-being remains a priority. The recently published Bí Cineálta Procedures provide schools with resources and guidance to support students and tackle bullying behavior effectively. These procedures will be accessible online, with physical copies distributed to schools soon, accompanied by professional learning resources for staff and parents.
