Germany: QuaMath – A programme for the long-term improvement of Maths Education

The programme “QuaMath – Developing Teaching and Training Quality in Mathematics”, initiated by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany (Kultusministerkonferenz), has now been launched, in cooperation with 15 Länder. The aim is to strengthen the teaching of Mathematics in Germany in the long term and, in doing so, to make it more relevant to pupils’ lives and to their understanding of the outside world.
A study on education trends published by the IQB in autumn 2022 has clearly shown that increased efforts must be made to help more pupils reach the educational standards established by the Standing Conference. Currently, only about 50% of pupils master the skills that constitute the minimum standard in Mathematics.
For this reason, the QuaMath programme aims to contribute to the concrete and long-term improvement of Mathematics lessons by supporting teachers in the furthering of their professional development. The programme brings together research and practice thanks to cooperation efforts across the Länder, in order to strengthen Mathematics education for all school levels, from primary to upper secondary schools.
The focus is on content and on the pedagogical quality of its teaching, so as to implement improvements in a consistent manner across the education and training systems of the Länder, together with all the stakeholders involved. In the long term, the programme intends to reach and support up to 10,000 schools, and to further develop the quality of their Mathematics teaching through additional teacher training, appropriate materials, and support from qualified mathematicians from the German Centre for Mathematics Teacher Education (Deutsches Zentrum für Lehrkräftebildung in Mathematik – DZLM).
