Belgium (FR): New national assessment in primary education
The French Community in Belgium has decided that from the 2025/2026 school year, all pupils enrolled in the 3rd year of primary education will have to take the CLÉ assessment (Calculer, Lire et écrire).
As announced in its Declaration on Community Policy (2024-2029), the new government of the French Community in Belgium subjects all pupils in the 3rd year of primary education to a national assessment. Unlike the CEB - Certificat d'Etudes de Base, the national evaluation at the end of the 6th year of primary education - the CLÉ assessment (Mathematics, Reading and Writing) will not lead to a diploma, but the results will be included in the pupil’s report.
National evaluations should be seen as an opportunity to assess learning and provide better support for pupils who need it. The aim is to be able to detect any shortcomings in pupils as early as possible.
