Flanders is reinforcing primary education with ambitious attainment targets, focusing on Dutch and mathematics, alongside STEM and social skills. Early education prioritises Dutch, with structured minimum and aspirational targets. At least half of teaching time will be dedicated to Dutch and maths. Pupils who fail to meet Dutch benchmarks by primary school’s end must take on additional hours per week in secondary education. These measures underscore Flanders' commitment to academic excellence.

Flanders continues to raise the bar in primary education by developing ambitious, knowledge-rich attainment targets. With a firm emphasis on Dutch and mathematics, the region is also prioritising STEM subjects, personal development, and social skills to equip pupils with a strong academic foundation.

From the earliest years of childhood education, Dutch language acquisition takes centre stage. Minimum targets have been established for vocabulary, listening skills, and numeracy, while aspirational targets guide the development of speaking, reading, and writing abilities. By the end of primary education, students are expected to meet these minimum benchmarks in Dutch and mathematics, both collectively and on an individual level.

Recognising the critical importance of language and numeracy skills, Flanders mandates that at least half of primary school teaching time should be dedicated to Dutch and mathematics. This structured approach ensures that pupils receive a robust grounding in essential subjects, fostering long-term academic success.

To support students who have yet to fully meet the Dutch language objectives by the end of primary school but demonstrate progress, a new policy is set to be introduced. These students will be required to undertake an additional three hours of Dutch lessons per week in secondary education, reinforcing their linguistic proficiency and boosting their educational trajectory.

Flanders' commitment to excellence in education is clear. By setting high standards and implementing targeted support measures, the region is ensuring that all pupils develop the fundamental skills necessary for future success.
