OVERVIEW

In Belgium – French Community, the payment of registration fees is a requirement for all students (except specific categories) and is applied in all education cycles.
There is no fee differentiation depending on the education cycle, the field of study (specific discipline) and programme (taught in foreign language, studying for a second degree etc.). Fees may differ depending on the type of higher education institution.
Waivers or reductions are available, subject to criteria depending on the socio-economic status of the student.
Direct financial support is provided by need-based grants. Loans are not available.
Indirect financial support to students and their families is provided in the form of tax benefits (for students' parents and for students with income) and family allocations. Students benefit from additional reductions such as transport, culture events' tickets etc. The students' age limit so that their parents are eligible for family allowances is 25 years.

FEES

All categories of students in all cycles are required to pay registration fee, except in the following cases:

- Students receiving a need-based grant do not pay fees

- International students, beneficiaries of development and cooperation grant do not pay fees

In short cycle certain student categories (unemployed persons, members of administrative, auxiliary or education staff of subsidised education institutions) are also exempt from payment of administrative fees.
There are no minimum fee amounts set for any of the education cycles.
The type of higher education institution (university, university colleges, art schools, Social Advancement Education) impacts the amount charged.
The amounts do not depend on the field of study, except for the following study domains: image technologies (techniques de l'image), applied communication (communication appliquée), and press and information (presse et information) des hautes écoles.
Full and part-time students on non-state subsidised places (second and short cycles), and full and part-time students studying in specific disciplines (first and second cycles) pay higher fees.
International students pay higher fees unless they are eligible for exemptions.
EU students are subject to the same policies applied to home students and could pay higher fees in case they are not compliant with the requirements for funding by the French Community.

Need-based grants are available to home and international full-time students in first, second and short cycles.
Merit-based and universal grants are not offered
The grants are subject to compliance with eligibility criteria and are provided in monthly instalments for the duration of 12 months. .

There is no age limit for accessibility to grants.
